Bought by our champion tipster Gary Nutting for just £8,000 at the Ascot breeze-up sale last year, the Chris Wall-trained filly is fulfilling the potential implicit in her pedigree.
By unbeaten Harbour Watch out of winning dam Krynica, she is closely related to Phoenix Tower, who won the Earl Of Sefton and finished runner -up in the Lockinge, Prince Of Wales’s, Eclipse and Juddmonte International.
Wall, who described her as ‘a winner waiting to happen’ at the end of her promising 2yo campaign said: “Flood Defence has been a model of consistency and she’s improved with time and distance.
“She still looked green when coming from last to first to win a competitive mile handicap at Doncaster at the end of June, but was more polished over the extra two furlongs at Sandown.
“She travelled almost too well in a slowly run race and showed good battling qualities to reel in the leader close home. It was a very pleasing performance, especially in a tactical affair that wouldn’t have necessarily suited her.”
Wall added that she appears to have come out of the race well and is likely to have an entry in the 1m2f handicap at Salisbury next Monday, with a decision on her participation expected after she has worked midweek.
