Friday
16 March
The
lays continue to be a very reliable source of information
in this column, although there was a sting in the tail yesterday
when Wichita Lineman defied an early drift to run out a heavily
backed 11-8 winner.
The
other four lays all got beat, though, including Fair
Along, one of the leading fancies at the start
of the day at least for the County Hurdle.
None
of the backs listed here were successful despite a generally
good day for fancied horses at Cheltenham.
Thursday
15 March
Another
clean sweep for followers of the lay horses yesterday
as all the drifters were duly beaten, including World Hurdle hot
favourite Black Jack Ketchum.
None
of the best-backed horses managed to prevail, though Mighty Man
went mightily close when forcing Inglis Drever to pull out all the
stops in the World Hurdle.
Wednesday
14 March
Aran
Concerto (2-1>5-2) 5-2
long considered one of the bankers of the meeting, was our top morning
drifter yesterday and those early vibes proved spot-on as the Noel
Meade-trained ace failed to make the frame.
Ross
River (13-1>17-1) 14-1 and Darby
Wall (10-1>13-1) 12-1 were other drifters successfully
pinpointed by exchange markets, but there was a sting in the tail
for layers as Burntoakboy (8-1>19-2)
defied apparent weakness to win at 10-1.
None
of the six backs obliged, but anyone who followed the
early move for River City (59-1>47-1) with an each-way
bet will be on good terms with themselves as Noel Chances
33-1 shot finished third.
Tuesday
13 March
Ten
Most Wanted followers were in clover again yesterday as all five
lays duly got turned over, headed by Irelands
main Supreme Novices Hurdle contender De
Valira (9-1>12-1) 10-1.
Lennon
(15-1>24-1) 20-1, Gemini Lucy
(23-1>29-1) 20-1 and Asian Maze
(17-1>19-1) also followed suit, while the morning weakness of
Spot Thedifference (5-1>11-2)
6-1 proved spot-on as he could finish only fourth to stablemate
Heads Onthe Ground in the cross-country race.
Not
such a good day for followers of the best-backed horses, however,
as none of the five managed to win. Granit
Jack (9-1>8-1) 15-2, runner-up to Ebaziyan in the
Supreme Novices, fared best of that contingent and is clearly
starting to fu;fil his potential after problems with stomach ulcers
earlier in the season.
Monday
12 March
A
great way to start Cheltenham week for Ten Most Wanted fans as no
less than seven of yesterdays trades went the way the
morning market had predicted.
The
lays led the way with another clean sweep as all five
drifters got beat, including chart topper Elegant
Cutter (3-1>5-1) 4-1,
Mon Michel (4-6>4-5) 8-11
and The Hardy Boy (8-13>9-10)
1-1.
The
successful backs were King Triton (4-1>5-2)
6-5 and Enlightenment (7-4>6-4) 5-4, the
latter having capitalised on the apparent weakness of Mon Michel
in the same race.
Sunday
11 March
Once
again a profitable day for followers of the lay horses
in Ten Most Wanted as all but one of the five drifters listed duly
got turned over.
They
included our top lay of the day, Lusaka
de Pembo, who went out from 9-4 to 3-1 in the morning
on Betdaq and ran accordingly, trailing in well beaten despite starting
2-1 favourite after later support.
Also
blowing out, as those early market moves had suggested, were The
Speaker (15-2>14-1) 8-1, Xellance
(8-1>14-1) 11-1 and Sharp Jack
(8-1>14-1) 12-1.
None
of the five steamers won on a rare blank day for followers of the
best-backed horses.
