'Horse's Mouth' - the inside word on who’s hot and who’s not

Tuesday 15 April

Glorious Gift (3.50 Nottingham) stayed on well to finish second in an above-average Folkestone maiden over 7f last time and, sharper for that first run of the season, is expected to go one better today.

Sunday 23 March

Ace Of Spies (3.55 Musselburgh) has been showing improved form nat home following a short break from all-weather racing and is fancied by the Mark Johnston stable to open his account on his turf debut...Big Zeb (3.50 Fairyhouse) is very highly rated by trainer Colm Murphy and expected to win today's feature race in Ireland over what looks his ideal trip.

Monday 17 March

Dun Doire (3.55 Down Royal) missed the Cheltenham Festival - where he won two years ago - to wait for this marathon event and with the heavy ground sure to bring his bottomless stamina into play, there is plenty of confidence in the Tony Martin stable that the gelding will win here before a possible tilt at next month's Grand National.

Thursday 13 March

Zaarito (5.50 Cheltenham) carries maximum stable confidence from the Colm Murphy yard that boasts a hugely impressive record with the few horses it sends over from Ireland. Brave Inca, winner of the Champion Hurdle and Supreme Novices, and Feathard Lady (Christmas Hurdle) have returned home with major prizes in the past...now it's the turn of the unbeaten Zaarito, who has been heavily backed in recent weeks and is regarded by many as the Irish banker of the meeting.

Tuesday 11 March

Ashkazar (5.20 Cheltenham) has been cleverly placed by the David Pipe stable to follow up Saturday's easy victory in the Imperial Cup as the penalty he was due to carry for winning that hotly contested handicap has been nullified by the conditions of this race...namely that no penalty may take a horse's weight beyond 11st 12lb. As a result, the classy ex-French gelding races off the same mark here and, up against his own age group, looks to have a much easier task than he faced when taking on older, more experienced handicappers at Sandown.

Saturday 1 March

Lothian Falcon (2.25 Doncaster) is expected to make a winning return to hurdles as part of his preparation for the Scottish Grand National as trainer Peter Maddison seeks to protect his handicap mark over fences.

Friday 15 February

Crack Away Jack (2.05 Sandown) has shown progressive form on both starts and is fancied by the Emma Lavelle stable to open his account now that he has the necessary experience behind him...Lord Of The Reins (4.30 Lingfield) is a horse worth following on the all-weather this winter according to trainer Derrick Shaw and the 4yo takes the eye off bottomweight with useful claiming jockey Tolley Dean taking off an extra 3lb.

Sunday 10 February

Cork All Star (2.15 Leopardstown) is expected to consolidate his position as favourite for the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham by winning his prep race today. Sources close to the Jessica Harrington stable have revealed he ran 'flat' last time but that he is back in top form after a six-week break...Carl Llewellyn has high hopes that Kid Charlemagne (1.50 Hereford) will open his account over hurdles now that his horses are in much better form. This well-regarded horse, unbeaten in bumpers last season, was found to have mucus in his lungs after disappointing at Folkestone in November and has been given plenty of time to recover.

Thursday 31 January

Ouir Jasper (3.10 Wincanton), a relatively rare runner at the Somerset track for his northwest-based trainer Donald McCain, is handicapped to beat his rivals from some of the big southern stables.

Wednesday 23 January

Bouncing King (3.30 Musselburgh) will appreciate the better ground at this well-drained track and is rated a smart handicap chaser in the making by trainer Donald McCain...Sherwoods Folly (3.10) Huntingdon) is capable of considerably better than he's shown so far this season and is worth keeping an eye on here with future engagements in mind as Henry Daly expects him to make his mark over fences.

Tuesday 8 January

Marcus (1.50 Leicester) is highly regarded by the Emma Lavelle stable and will be fancied to step up on his seasonal debut second - his first run over fences - provided there is no major deterioration in the forecast good to soft ground on the chase course.

Monday 7 January

Ingratitude (2.00 Ludlow) is fancied to outclass his rivals in the 2m handicap hurdle having competed in much higher grade at Cheltenham last time when the Nicky Henderson yard was out of form...Stablemate Fiddling Again (2.20 Taunton), a smart bumper horse last season, is expected to complete an across-the-card double for the Henderson team in the mares-only novice hurdle.

Friday 28 December

The Wandering Man (12.25 Leopardstown), a dual bumper winner and rated an above-average prospect by trainer Colm Murphy, is expected to open his account over hurdles, having shaped with plenty of promise before getting tired on his recent reappearance.

Friday 14 December

Tazbar (2.15 Doncaster) is highly regarded by the Keith Reveley stable and thought to be well up to defying his 7lb penalty for an easy win last time. The form of his previous close second is working out very well and the forecast quick ground is very much in his favour...Jack The Giant (2.15 Cheltenham), third in last season's Arkle Chase on ground softer than ideal, is also expected to relish today's quicker surface and strongly fancied by the Nicky Henderson yard to exploit a 30lb lower mark over hurdles.

Saturday 8 December

Evelith Echo (12.55 Sandown) is expected to relish the heavy ground and that should give him the edge over main market rivals County Zen and Hell's Bay, both of whom may prefer less testing conditions...Dancer's Serenade (1.50 Wetherby) had to make his own running after pulling hard behind a slow early pace at Huntingdon last time, but ought to have the race run to suit here and can vindicate his trainer's view that he's potentially well handicapped.

Tuesday 4 December

April San (1.40 Hereford) has improved following a wind operation during the summer and, sharpened up by his recent seasonal debut, is fancied by the Ferdy Murphy yard to open his account over hurdles...Shouldhavehadthat (2.10 Hereford) can complete a quick double for the Murphy team now he steps up to a more suitable trip. Formerly trained by Nicky Henderson, the gelding is bred to appreciate a stamina test.

Monday 3 December

R'Cam (1.30 Folkestone) is regarded as a potentially smart chasing ptospect by trainer Carl Llewellyn, who expects him to make an immediate impact hurdles after showing promise on both bumper starts last season...Isntshelovely (3.30 Folkestone) ran above stable expectations when second on her debut at Warwick a month ago in a race that is working out well and is fancied to go one better by insiders at Brendan Powell's in-form yard.
